Introduction

Many of us are bothered by fatty deposits in various areas of our bodies. In many cases even with aggressive exercise and dieting, these fatty deposits persist. The common areas include neck and/or below the chin, the abdomen, torso, and both upper and lower extremities. As you can see, almost all areas of the body can be covered with the use of liposuction. Make your appointment with Dr. Sampson today and we will assist you in making your dreams of a new body come true.

How Is The Procedure Performed?

Dr. Sampson performs liposuction in his private surgical suite in Jackson, Michigan. His suite is located close to the cities of Battle Creek, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Adrian Michigan. Dr. Sampson uses the common types of suction lipectomy or lipoplasty is his aim to provide the very best treatment regimen for his patients.

The common variations of the procedure include:

  • Traditional liposuction, which includes surgical suctioning of excess fat deposits.
  • The Tumescent Liposuction technique, sometimes called the super wet technique that includes the infusion of saline solution with Epinephrine and Lidocaine to control bleeding and post-operative pain.
  • The ultrasonic-assisted lipoplasty or UAL, uses ultrasonic energy to dissolve fatty tissue before the fat is suctioned.
  • A very new technique has been recently developed called 'The Smart-Lipo' technique, which uses a laser to dissolve fatty tissue before the suction is done.

Do not be confused by the multiple choices. Dr. Sampson will evaluate each patient and he will make individualized plans for each patient's care.

  • Cheeks, chin, and neck
  • Upper arms
  • Legs, including thighs and lower leg
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Abdomen and torso, breasts or chest areas
  • Back and posterior torso
  • Saddle bags

Liposuction procedures are usually done under general anesthesia but on many occasions, some isolated areas can be treated under local anesthesia with the help of minimal sedation. They are often combined with other Michigan plastic surgery procedures, including tummy tuck and breast reduction. Come in and see Dr. Sampson so he can develop a plan for you.

Recovery

Following your liposuction procedure, Dr. Sampson places his patients in a compression garment. These garments are used to compress skin to new contours and will assist in reducing post-operative swelling.

On the first night after surgery, you will have minimal to moderate pain. The discomfort is usually quite tolerable and is well controlled with pain medications. There can be drainage from the surgical site the night of surgery, but this usually resolves within 24 hours after surgery.

Whenever small-localized areas are treated, Dr. Sampson allows his patients to return to work in a few days. In areas of extensive surgery, work can usually be resumed within a week.

Dr. Sampson encourages patients to continue use of the surgical garments for 4-6 weeks following surgery.

There are usually no sutures involved and the wound will heal well with very minimal scarring. Most patient are quite overjoyed by the significant improvement in their bodies after liposuction is performed. There is progressive improvement in the treated areas over a 3-6 month period.

Potential Risks and Complications

Dr. Sampson chooses his patients carefully in order to reduce the risks and complications of the procedure.

Liposuction is not generally a means of weight loss. It is a method of contouring the body. Dr. Sampson stresses the importance of the proper use of this operation technique and his results in liposuction patients in Michigan have severed as evidence of his excellent preoperative evaluations.

Like all surgical procedures, there are risks of bleeding, infection and risks of anesthesia. Dr. Sampson prescribes medication for prevention of infection and is particularly careful in use of pre-operative screening for liposuction patients. Other important risks include, blood clots, and seroma, which is a collection of fluid under the skin.

Fortunately, with an experienced, liposuction Michigan Board Certified surgeon like Dr. Sampson, these risks are very much limited.

Liposuction Answers to Common Questions

Can liposuction be used for weight loss?
Liposuction was initially invented as a technique for contouring of the body though it has been used to remove large volumes of fatty tissue, which also has a significant increase in potential risks when used as a technique for weight loss.

Does the fat removed by liposuction ever come back?
Liposuction removes only part of the many cells in a particular area. If a patient eats aggressively, it is possible to gain weight or fat in the area of previous suctioning.

Can Dr. Sampson tell how much tissue will be removed at the time of surgery?
It is quite difficult to estimate the volume of tissue to be removed prior to surgery. Fortunately, usually an accurate estimate is not required to achieve excellent results.

Is any one type of liposuction better than the other?
The different types of liposuction all have their individual advantages and disadvantages. Dr. Sampson, his experience, and his training will develop an individualized plan for each patient to get the best results.

Can a small area be treated without general anesthesia?
In many occasions, small-localized deposits can be treated without general anesthesia.

What happens to excess skin after liposuction?
There is usually some contraction of skin after liposuction. In some patients, the skin may lose its ability to properly contract after surgery.
