Liposuction
General Information about Liposuction
Absolute Contraindications:
- Active, unstable, or untreated psychiatric diseases, problems, or syndromes
- "Morbid Obesity"
- Unwillingness to undergo blood testing, photography, and/or sign consents
- Unrealistic expectations for liposuction surgery
- Unwillingness and/or inability to follow surgeon's recommendations or instructions
- Desire to use liposuction as weight loss technique, or for "cellulite" removal
- Untreated drug or alcohol addiction
- Loss of more than 75 pounds during last 12 months
- Complete unwillingness and/or inability to maintain activity or dietary regimens
- Major life stress within last 6 months (i.e. loss of spouse or child, divorce)
- Use of some specific medications, which cannot be stopped
- Eating disorders, anorexia, bulimia, or "body image" disorder
- Some "gender reassignment patients," depending upon "stage" of reassignment
- Active and/or incompletely treated major cancer (current chemotherapy)
- Active and/or untreated skin and/or systemic diseases or infections
- Active and/or untreated heart or kidney disease (renal dialysis)
- Active and/or untreated thyroid disease
- Pregnancy or less than 6 months post-partum
- Major immunosuppressive therapy (high dose steroids)
- Anticoagulant therapy (Coumadin or heparin)
- Uncontrolled or "difficult to control" diabetes
- Major surgery and/or general anesthesia within in last 6 months
- Stroke or heart attack within last 6 months
- Significantly less than "ideal body weight"
- History or positive blood test for hepatitis A, B, C or HIV
- Most genetic "bleeding disorders"
- American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) classification of III or higher
- Desire to have more than 4% of body weight in fat removed during single surgery
- Insistence that multiple surgeries be performed during single treatment
- Insufficient understanding of liposuction goals
- True allergy to lidocaine or "one of its relatives."
Relative Contraindications:
- Keloid formation
- More than 50 pounds weight loss during last year
- Some medications which cannot or will not be stopped, including OTC and herbals
- Previous incision surgeries to areas "of interest" to patient
- Some mental or physical disabilities
- Excessive smoking or alcohol use
- Lifestyles which cannot or will not be changed
- Some pigmentation abnormalities
- Use of liposuction as "substitute" for diet and/or exercise
- Presumed allergy to lidocaine or its relatives (allergy testing required)
- Some psychiatric and/or social problems
- Anxiety disorders or phobias
- Previous liposuction in areas "of interest"
- Previous liposuction complications
